This Action10 initiative focuses on supporting laboratory management in Burkina Faso and Uganda.
By supporting institutions in this crucial sector, we’re not only reducing poverty but also ensuring the development of trustworthy laboratories, which are essential for the nation’s environmental health and food safety. Two examples are the Senexel laboratory in Burkina Faso and the St. Michael Food Laboratory in Uganda, laboratories that can make an even more significant impact with your support.
Empowering Laboratory Management:
In both Burkina Faso and Uganda, laboratory management faces significant challenges, from inadequate infrastructure to limited resources. However, through strategic partnerships and targeted support, Action10 is making significant advances:
Burkina Faso:
- Laboratories in Burkina Faso struggle with basic requirements, hindering their ability to provide reliable services.
- As a partner of Senexel Laboratory, Action10 has provided expert advice and practical training to improve efficiency and accreditation processes.
- By supporting initiatives like assigning master students for practical training, we’re fostering a win-win scenario, benefiting the laboratories, the students, and the community.
Uganda:
- Michael Food Lab and Consultancy, is a prime example of potential awaiting support. Established in 2016, the lab has already made strides in food testing but seeks funding to expand its services.
- The laboratory clientele includes organizations like the UN, indicating its credibility and market demand.
- Challenges such as access to equipment hinder its growth, highlighting the need for financial support to unlock its full potential and impact on the region.

About Burkina Faso and Uganda
In Burkina Faso, environmental health remains a central public health priority, with concerns around water quality, sanitation, and pollution impacting the population’s well-being. Laboratories specializing in environmental testing provide critical support by conducting water quality assessments, analyzing soil and air samples, and identifying hazardous contaminants. These analyses are essential in areas where access to clean water is limited and sanitation infrastructure is underdeveloped.
In Uganda, food safety is a significant public health issue, especially given that a large part of the population depends on locally produced and distributed food. Laboratories dedicated to food testing help protect the public by analyzing agricultural products and food items for microbial contaminants, pesticide residues, and other harmful substances. These safety checks are crucial for reducing foodborne illnesses and ensuring that food meets safety standards before it reaches consumers.
