We provide Banapads which are affordable, eco-friendly and hygienic sanitary pads made from banana pseudo-stems to poor women in rural Uganda.
Here’s how it works:
Creating local markets
Banapads is a social enterprise that produces eco-friendly sanitary pads and distributes them through a sales force of female entrepreneurs in rural Uganda and Tanzania. It is a market based solution improving hygiene and sanitation as well as increasing school attendance for girls who are very frequently absent during their menstruation.
Skills and training
Banapads use a micro-consignment model, which provides local women entrepreneurs with a “business in a bag”. This is a complete start-up kit of inventory, training & marketing support which enables local women to gain practical business and managerial skills whilst earning a commission on each sale. Women are empowered from production to delivery.
We want to build a network of over 400 women that will reach more than 50,000 rural girls and women.
Your donation can really make a difference
Girls and women across remote areas of Uganda have no other option than to use harmful practices and materials such as newspaper or rags during menstruation due to the lack of access and affordability of sanitary pads.
What’s more, all too frequently this leads to girls being absent from school and women not able to go to work, conditions which contribute to the cycle of poverty.
