Based in Benin City in Nigeria, the work of SpellAfrica cuts across international borders “to improve the poor standard of English across Africa via mobile learning.” Their founder, Elvis Austins, a social entrepreneur from Nigeria has together with a determined team weaved in fun & play into teaching and applied modern technology such as mobile phone apps to encourage young Africans to participate in informal English classes.

Many Africans do not receive training in formal English, which makes SpellAfrica’s mission ever so important during times when English is undoubtedly a highly valuable skill.

The organization was recently invited by the United Nations to participate in the 53rd Session of the Commission for Social Development Conference in New York. Elvis was there and talks excitedly about the experience. “It was a great opportunity for me to meet with hundreds of social entrepreneurs from across the world who are working on solving some of our world’s biggest issues. A place to network, learn and share knowledge.”

Just before his return to Nigeria, Elvis received the news that he was shortlisted to participate in the Global Emerging Entrepreneurship Event at the White House in Washington D.C. This was a one-day event for a selected 150 emerging entrepreneurs from across the Globe.

Among the audience were some renowned US-based entrepreneurs and investors such as Kiva’s founder Julie Hanna, Airbnb co-founder Brian Chesky and Tony Elumelu, founder of Tony Elumelu Foundation.

“We had the privilege of being addressed by the US president who commended us for being on the forefront in the flight to reduce poverty while encouraging us to continue doing social good.”

Action10 congratulates SpellAfrica for their great work and is proud to be part of this valuable partnership.
